From Ocean to Ingredient
Let’s be real, there’s no Planet B. At Artemis, protecting the environment guides our decisions at every level. Our ingredients depend on healthy ecosystems, so prioritizing sustainable practices isn’t just important; it’s essential.
This Earth Day, we’re taking a closer look at how our newest ingredients are pushing sustainability forward, starting with one of nature’s most powerful resources: algae.
Algae: A Natural Climate Ally
Algae is downright amazing. It’s nutrient dense, remarkably sustainable and offers meaningful health benefits. It’s no coincidence that two of the newest additions to the Artemis portfolio, InSea2® and WholeCal®, are derived from algae.
Here’s why algae really delivers:
- Requires no arable land or freshwater to grow
- Produces little to no greenhouse gas emissions during cultivation
- Absorbs excess nitrogen, helping reduce harmful algal blooms and “dead zones”
- Supports marine ecosystems by creating habitat and helping prevent coastal erosion
- Helps regulate pH levels in surrounding marine environments
- Has the potential to sequester an estimated 173 million metric tons of carbon annually (that’s roughly equivalent to New York State’s emissions!)

Seaweed is a type of large multicellular marine algae.
InSea2®:
InSea2® is a blend of standardized polyphenols derived from kelp and bladderwrack seaweed.
Studies suggest InSea2® may:
- Improve metabolic homeostasis, contributing to benefits from healthy weight management, improved heart health and a healthier inflammation response
- Support healthy blood sugar levels by acting on two digestive enzymes to affect how carbohydrates are absorbed
- Promote more stable blood glucose levels

Bladderwrack is a prevalent seaweed along rocky shores.

InSea2® is made from sustainably harvested kelp and bladderwrack from the North Atlantic off the coast of Canada. The algae are processed locally using a gentle hot water extraction process without solvents or additives, helping preserve their naturally occurring polyphenols.
Responsible harvesting practices help protect vital seaweed beds, which support coastal communities, reduce erosion, and play a meaningful role in carbon sequestration.
WholeCal®
WholeCal® contains 100% marine algae Lithothamnion calcareum with over 70 minerals and 16 amino acids. Naturally rich in highly bioavailable calcium, magnesium, and other essential nutrients, it supports bone density, enhances dental enamel strength, and strengthens the entire skeletal system.

WholeCal® starts with a unique marine algae that naturally forms mineral-rich structures as it grows. Over time, pieces break off and settle on the ocean floor, forming nutrient-dense deposits. These are sustainably harvested from the pristine Atlantic waters off the coast of Brazil using eco-friendly technology designed to leave the surrounding ecosystem undisturbed.
From there, the material is sun-dried, milled, and gently heat treated, with no chemical processing. WholeCal® is produced in a way that allows these natural deposits to continually replenish, supporting a reliable and sustainable supply.
