Ground-breaking ELDERGUT study shows strong scientific support for ElderCraft® ingredient and digestive health benefits related to black elderberry polyphenols
Artemis International, Inc., the leading supplier of Berryceutical® ingredients to the dietary supplement, functional food and beverage industries, announces the release of pioneering research[1] supporting the prebiotic benefits of its ElderCraft elderberry extract ingredient. These are the first scientific findings to demonstrate conclusive evidence of the relationship between black elderberry polyphenols and individuals’ overall digestive health.
The ELDERGUT Study was designed to evaluate the effects of ElderCraft, a polyphenol-standardized extract made from European Black Elderberry, on the human gut microbiota. The study involved 30 human participants who took 300 mg of ElderCraft twice a day for six weeks. The results concluded that ElderCraft European Black Elderberry extract induces profound changes in microbial diversity measures (alpha and beta diversity). Additionally, it resulted in elevated and lasting levels of Akkermansia muciniphila, an important gut bacterial strain associated with human health. No adverse events were reported during the study.
“It is becoming increasingly evident that polyphenols have strong prebiotic effects on the human gut microbiota,” says Melanie Bush, vice president of science and research at Artemis International. “This is consistent with increased understanding in the immune health space about the important relationship between gut health and immune health. Other studies have illustrated the immune-boosting and direct anti-viral benefits of ElderCraft. Now, this ELDERGUT study provides additional insight about the gut-health angle of ElderCraft’s immune benefits, further demonstrating its unique multifunctionality.”
The findings reinforce the benefits of ElderCraft, now uniquely positioned as a clinically validated ingredient in the growing pre- and probiotic market. The data also provides an inroad for customers to create new immune-health products targeted specifically to gut health, in addition to the more typical cold-and-flu-focused options. “We welcome inquiries from forward-thinking formulators who share our vision of sizable opportunity in this emerging market,” says Artemis president Leslie Gallo.
